You See Me Smile

Slowly, surely I decline
Succumbing to the deepening dread
Inward, I am dead and numb
Outward, you see me smile

Perhaps it’s something that I said
That’s fooled you into thinking sorrow
Is naught but smiling;
Perhaps I act too much like everyone you see

When in fact, I am but hiding

How quickly, surely hope would grow
In my soul to have you know
That outward me is lying
Perhaps then too, I’d see tomorrow
As worth the while of holding hope, and yet –
You see me smile
